Last year’s Flip ‘Best of Festival’ winner Kudan by Taku Kimura has posted a download on their website to allow you to have your very own paper Kudan. As well as a number of wallpapers to download for your computer, there is a paper template for your own Kudan which you can then cut out and keep! If you’re as bigger fan as we are of his short film then this is a great little thing to get!
In other news, the Best of Flip 2009 starts soon with the first showing on the 15th July at Light House Media Centre, Wolverhampton. It will take place between 6:30 and 9:30.
The official text for the event states:
‘This evening’s event, run in conjunction with Animation Forum West Midlands, includes a packed programme. Beginning with a screening of the best of FLIP 2009, a 35 mins programme of award winning films from across the world. This is followed by a screening and talk from Light House Animator in Residence Drew Roper. Drew just finished his first commercial commission in between stints on The Fantastic Mr. Fox and Tim Burtons’ new Disney production. Drew will show his 3.5 min stop motion short and the sets and puppet will be on display. Finally, there will be the official launch of this year’s Great Animation Challenge, which is very much like last year’s but with an exciting twist – not to be missed. All this and networking and drinks supplied courtesy of Animation Forum West Midlands.’

So we hope to see you there.
Portfolio Review Sessions 6 November, 4.30
Flip is looking for animators to get their showreel reviewed at this year’s festival. We introduced this session last year for the first time and it went down very well. It’s a great opportunity to get your showreel seen by professionals, to get expert feedback and to open doors to new and valuable contacts. The idea (and the catch!) is that you present your showreel to a panel in front of a live audience who also receive the benefit of the panels’ wisdom. The session is supported by Business Link West Midlands. An adviser will provide all 6 animators at this session with creative business support and in addition Business Link West Midlands will also be available to offer advice and guidance to any creative business attending during the day.
This is only open to animators based in the West Midlands. Interested? contact Peter McLuskie, firstname.lastname@example.org, 01902 716055
Crikey you go off sick for a short while and come back to a deluge! Peter’s desk has disappeared under a tidal wave of packages and despite the closing date having already passed still them come.
There are now approximately 200 entries to this years flip and my, what a mammoth task Peter and the judges have to process them all. I don’t envy them one bit It’s time consuming enough to be adding them to the flip map (more to be added soon) once they’ve been processed let alone sit, watch and have to review every single one!
Now for something not so different from me….Stop Motion.
While I was out in quarantine my colleague Ren sent me a link to stop motion animation set to the dulcet tones of Bloc Party. This made me feel better for two reasons. I like stop motion and I like Bloc Party, and although I know I promised to be more varied with my postings with my first post on my return it felt fitting to share!
