Flip Festival 2008 Video Interviews

As promised here are the video interviews that we shot over the weekend of the festival. We managed to take take some of the panellists to a quiet corner (which is very hard at a busy festival) and ask them a few questions. This is the first time I have put video together for use on the internet, and it was really fun, easy and inspiring. I used mini DV camera, Windows Movie Maker and Vimeo. If you took any video footage at Flip please add your links in a comment. Enjoy.

Thanks Everyone!

The Flip team would like to say a huge thanks to everyone who came to the festival last weekend. As you will agree the festival programme was especially fantastic this year. The highlights for me were the launch at TIC where we heard from Camilla Deakin about the new animation content site 4mations and had a lively discussion from the digital movers and shakers from the region.

Osbert Parker, interviewed by Sam Moore was a real treat, he was extremely charismatic and inspirational. To see his films ‘Film Noir’ and ‘Yours Truly’ on the big screen was very special. For those of you who didn’t manage to make it to that screening, you missed out but here is an extract from ‘Yours Truly’ on YouTube.

Flip 08 ended with a party hosted by Colour (read Matthew’s write up) which was a perfect end to the festival weekend with live music from Epic45 and Limechalks, homemade cakes and visuals.

We have recorded a few short interviews with some of the speakers and filmmakers over the weekend and will be putting them up on the blog soon. If you have recorded any video or taken any photographs at the festival please get in touch, or put a link in the comments.

Many, Many thanks to all the people who make Flip possible and all of the partners and sponsors.

Colour Host Flip Festival Closing Party

Resident music promoters Colour will host this year’s Flip closing party, which will feature live music from regional artists, DJ sets, live visuals and homemade cakes.

Colour is a West Midlands-based promotions group founded in 2006. Their focus is to bring leftfield indie, electronica, folk and other mainstream-eschewing artists to the region through live music events and the music and culture blog wearecolour.com.

Ninja Theory

This is a terrible thing for a festival programmer to admit to, but I don’t know much about games and gaming. But the more I see of Ninja Theory, the more I want to.

When I first thought about inviting them to Flip it was purely on the basis of their visuals for Heavenly Sword. But the actual game is only part of the Heavenly Sword experience. Before it was released, Ninja Theory and Sony commissioned an animation series to act as a prequel to the game. This series of five films are beautiful pieces of work in their own right. I think they will be shown during the Ninja Theory session, but here’s a sneak preview.

Sita Sings the Blues – Fri 7 6.00 – 7.30pm

Sita is a goddess separated from her beloved Lord and husband Rama. Nina is an animator whose husband moves to India, then dumps her by email. Three hilarious shadow puppets narrate both ancient tragedy and modern comedy in this beautifully animated interpretation of the Indian epic Ramayana. Set to the 1920’s jazz vocals of Annette Hanshaw, Sita Sings the Blues earns its tagline as “The Greatest Break-Up Story Ever Told.”

Directed, written, produced, designed and animated by Nina Paley, Sita Sings the Blues has already won 2 major awards this year at Annecy International Animation festival and Berlin International Festival, and this special Flip event is one of only two UK screenings this year.

Here is a great interview with the filmmakers from the Tribeca Film Festival:

Portfolio Reviews Call for Animators!

We are looking for six up-and-coming animators to present their showreel during this year’s festival. The session takes place on 7th November 2008 between 4.00 and 5.30pm, and will provide professional feedback on showreels in front of a live audience.

We’re inviting six brave animators to present their showreel to a panel of experts representing various sectors, including games, character animation, advertising, 2D and 3D animation.

If you’re interested in getting some professional feedback on your showreel, drop Flip a line with a brief CV, to flip@light-house.co.uk.

Grad’s On Walls Event

The next highly anticipated Animation Forum WM event, Grad’s on Walls, takes place in October, giving animators the chance to schmooze, screen and shout about all things animation with fellow animators over an after-work drink.

Hot on the heels of Shorts on Walls and Ad’s on Walls comes Grad’s on Walls (see what we did there?), an Animation Forum WM event tailored to showcasing the best animated work by recent(ish) animation graduates in the region.

Whether a graduate animator or not, this Animation Forum event will again provide ample opportunity for animators of all levels to meet, chat and share a drink with their peers after-work in a relaxed bar setting. To attend this free event, please RSVP to david.luke.allen@bcu.ac.uk.

Animators will each get to screen and – if they’re not too shy, introduce, their animation at Concrete Bar @ The Big Peg, The Jewellery Quarter (6.30pm).

Submissions for Grad’s on Walls can include short films, music videos, experimental and commercial pieces. The only requirement for submissions is that animators should either be based within the West Midlands, or have graduated from a University within the region. That said, the rules are not set in stone, and good quality student and hobbyist work will also be considered for screenings.

Please supply all work, ideally on DVD format to:
